New Delhi, December 6: The Management Committee of Sri Sathya Sai International Centre is organising a talk on December 7, 2018 on ‘Importance of Ethical Governance in Foreign Policy’ by Former Foreign Secretary, Dr. S Jaishankar.
Dr. Jaishankar, an Indian diplomat with an experience of more than three decades, was India's Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018. Dr. Jaishankar, joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977, and is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. As foreign secretary, Dr. Jaishankar had perseveringly put efforts towards carving an identity, which has been one of the constitutive components of Indian foreign policy and is intricately linked to the ethical choices made at critical junctures.
The former secretary of foreign affairs has represented India's interests and fostered friendly working relationships with many countries across the world. He has also been duly credited with building a bridge between the external affairs ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office and helping shape a more robust foreign policy.
His appointment as India’s envoy to US during the Devyani Khobragade episode, and his deft handling of the crisis that could have embarrassed both India and the US if it had spun out of control, earned him laurels in Delhi. On the China front, Dr. Jaishankar so far has been India’s longest-serving envoy in Beijing. He has engaged with China and simultaneously asserted India’s national interests as evident during the Doklam standoff.
Interestingly, he also served as a press secretary and speech writer to President Shankar Dayal Sharma, besides being a political adviser to the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka from 1988 to 1990, giving him experience that few diplomats have.
