Since this model is impossible to upgrade – the firmware hasn’t been updated for a long time and the open mss community alternative for hacking it has disappeared – my goal is to recover the disk and its Data Recovery Services. The rest will go to recycling.
That’s good, Maxtor has made it heavy and sturdy: aluminum shell, steel inner cradle. In proportion the plastic parts and the epoxy of the electronic card represent very little weight.
To open the case, the principle is simple: you have to remove the 2 screws at the back, one of which is hidden under a guarantee sticker, remove the plastic cover, then you have to pull the cradle.

The principle is to use a flat screwdriver inserted in the notch in the middle, located under the 2 USB ports. Given the size of this notch, it may be possible to also use a Kensington-type lock.
